World Book Day

Thursday 5th March sees the return of arguably the greatest school day of the year: World
Book Day. It is part of 2026's National Year of Reading, a yearlong celebration of the joys of reading.
As usual, there will be plenty of activities taking place all of next week and the chance to cosplay as a literary character of your choice. This character has to be recognisable from a work of fiction, you cannot simply show up in jeans and a T-shirt or sportswear. Please check with your tutor, Mrs Grove, or myself if you want confirmation of what/who you dress up as.
The theme for this year's World Book Day is J R R Tolkien, author of famous works such as
The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings. Middle Earth, the fictional land in which the stories take place, is home to a plethora of ideas for cosplay, such as:

Main characters – Aragorn / Frodo / Gimli / Legolas / Gandalf
Races – Dwarf / Elf / Wizard / Hobbit / Orc / Uruk Hai / Nazgul / Ent

You can, however, dress up whichever literary character you want to. A guide to this is attached to this message. I will also be sharing links to pdfs of most of Tolkien's major works if you would like to read any of them.

Book tokens will be handed out to various students which can be redeemed for certain books or used as money off whichever book you fancy. The list of these books can be found in the link below.
Book tokens and other prizes will also be handed out as prizes for the various competitions taking place, details of which will come later this week. Be sure to pop along to the Library all of next week to take part (and well, every week, because libraries are awesome...)
As part of the National Year of Reading, we will also be celebrating International Children's Book Day on 2nd April and Free Comic Book Day on 2nd May. Free Comic Book Day, if you are unaware, is the first Saturday in May and allows you to go to your local comic bookshop and get a free comic. It isn't buy one get one; it isn't sign up for this and get one free; it is go to the shop and pick up one of the comics on offer: for free. It is a great chance to try reading something new.
