King's Group Academies

Higher Prior Attainers and Gifted and Talented Students

For students who have Higher Prior Attainment or have been identified as More Able or  Gifted and Talented in a specific subject(s) by their teachers, King’s Academy Prospect offers a broad range of extra and super-curricular opportunities to explore new horizons and develop 'reach for the stars' aspirations.

We do everything we can to nurture and develop all our students so that they can achieve the best possible outcomes. Where students have been identified as having higher prior attainment or are identified as More Able or Gifted and Talented, we put additional support and resources in place to help them achieve their full potential.

If you think that your child meets the criteria for HPA, G&T or MA please contact our More Able Coordinator, Miss A Holt (aholt@kgaprospect.uk)

Stretch and Challenge

From the start of Year 7, we work with groups of students who have been identified as having the potential to achieve the highest grades and go on to study at the most prestigious universities. We work closely with a range of partners to provide additional resources and mentoring, as well as ensuring that all teachers provide students with work to deepen their understanding and knowledge and challenge and inspire them in all their lessons.

The Brilliant Club

The Brilliant Club is an award-winning university access charity which works with schools and universities across the UK, including King's Academy Prospect.

The Brilliant Club exists to increase the number of pupils from under-represented backgrounds progressing to highly selective universities. They do this by mobilising the PhD community to share its academic expertise with state schools.

The Scholars Programme recruits, trains and places doctoral and postdoctoral researchers in schools to deliver programmes of university-style tutorials, which are supplemented by two university trips. Data from UCAS shows that students completing The Scholars Programme were significantly more likely to apply to, receive an offer from and progress to a highly selective university

Each year, a number of our most able students will participate in the scholars programme, benefiting from expert university tuition, completing a challenging programme of investigation and final assignment and celebrating in a graduation ceremony at a university visit.

Feedback from some of our students about Brilliant Club:

“It was challenging and helped me learn time management”

“It was difficult but it's good because we learned about things that we did not know yet and increased our knowledge on the topic and life skills.”

Feedback about the graduation event

“Today’s graduation was really good and made me feel proud about being part of the scholar’s programme”

“I thought it was very interesting and made me excited about going to university.”

Coach Bright

This Peer-to-Peer Programme gives two of our year groups the chance to benefit from the 1-1 or small group environment of coaching. Each year CoachBright trains a small group of our Year 12 students to be academic coaches. They are each then paired up with a younger student in Year 10. They meet once a week, after the school day for a one hour coaching session. Both coach and coachee will be at different but pivotal points of their educational journey – the programme encourages the support to help both students become independent and resilient learners.

Training our senior students as academic coaches ensures our younger students receive quality academic support from a relatable role model. Students develop listening, communication and leadership skills to aid them on the path to higher education, whilst working towards a Student Leadership Accreditation.

Younger students set their programme goal with their coach and it is down to them to decide together on the best use of their time. Through tailored coaching in the shared common environment of our school, the aim is that both the coach and coachee will learn and develop from each other throughout the 7 week programme.

Because of our strong relationship with Coachbright, we have been able to expand the programme with some of our Year 9 and 11 most able students. These students undergo the same coaching experience, with our Year 11 students trained by undergraduates from the University of Reading, who fund the programme for us.  We also run graduation trips where students can explore university campuses together and activities are led by coaches in order to give a sense of what being a university student is really like. Upon graduating, all our senior pupils become CoachBright Ambassadors, supporting their future development and aspirations.

The University of Reading

We enjoy a strong relationship with The University of Reading, an internationally recognised seat of learning excellence right on our doorstop, and indeed a popular destination for many of our Pros6 students.

We work with UoR on a wide range of programmes to support out more able students, from study skills, subject workshops and university experiences. We also benefit from the Students in Schools volunteer project, which sees graduate and undergraduate students coming into school to support our students on their journey to higher education.
