Year 9 Hair & Beauty Taster Course
Students in Year 9 have the opportunity to choose Hair & Beauty as a Taster Course. This exciting introduction covers both theory and practical lessons designed to inspire and engage.
Theory Lessons Include:
- Learning how to work safely in a salon environment, including:
- Understanding COSHH (Cntrol of Substances Hazardous to Health) regulations
- Cmmunicating with clients about potential risks
- Safe use f chemicals and protective equipment
- Understanding COSHH (Cntrol of Substances Hazardous to Health) regulations
- Exploring the wide range of career opportunities in the hair and beauty industry
- Creating and defining a new, innovative celebrity hair or beauty trend
- Researching different historical eras, from Ancient Egypt to modern styles, to understand how trends have evolved
- Investigating and designing ideas for new, eco-friendly hair and beauty products to support a more sustainable future
Practical Lessons Include:
- Shampooing and conditioning techniques
- Hair styling using curling and straightening tools
- Hair-up techniques, including plaiting and twisting
- Basic manicure skills
Key Stage 4
Course Title:
CO2A5 – VTCT Level 1/2 Technical Award in the Study of Hair and Beauty
This course is ideal for students interested in exploring the world of hair and beauty, with a balance of both theory and practical skills. It provides a strong foundation for future study or careers in the industry.
Theory Units:
UCO90 – Business and Entrepreneurship in the Hair and Beauty Sector
- Learn about different types of businesses within the industry
- Understand the basics of marketing and entrepreneurship
- Explore a range of business opportunities in the hair and beauty sector
UCO91 – Anatomy, Physiology and Cosmetic Science
- Study cosmetic chemistry and product development
- Understand the structure and function of the skin, hair, and nails (integumentary system)
- Learn how hair and beauty products are created and used safely
UCO92 – Design in the Hair and Beauty Sector
- Discover how to create and present design briefs
- Understand the principles behind developing creative ideas
- Improve your ability to analyse, reflect, and evaluate your work and others'
Practical Skills:
Students will prepare for real-world client sessions, including:
- Shampooing, conditioning, and deep hair masks
- Blow-drying and styling hair using straighteners or curling tools
- Hair-up techniques for special occasions such as weddings or proms
- Basic manicure skills
- Facial treatments and skincare routines
This course offers a valuable mix of creative, scientific, and business knowledge, preparing students for further study or work in the exciting hair and beauty industry.
